Manufacturing Automation Laboratory

The Manufacturing Automation Laboratory houses the following equipment

  • An IBM 7575 SCARA Robotic Arm with a PPT 250 Machine Vision System
  • An ADEPT Cobra s800 SCARA Robotic Arm with machine vision
  • An ADEPT Viper s850 Articulating Robotic Arm
  • A manual lathe
  • A 6 foot length food-processing conveyor system
  • Two Touch-Panel Computers for Workcell Control

This equipment is used for both instructional and research purposes. Recently, Dr. Earnest Fant used the IBM 7575 SCARA robotic arm/machine vision work cell with the food-processing conveyor to develop an automated system for assessing the internal temperature of cooked meat portions. The system ensures that the proper methodology is followed consistently and provides feedback concerning the the safety of the cooking process. The ADEPT Robotic Arms are new additions to the laboratory facilities in 2005 and are expected to be used extensively in future research projects as well as class assignments.
